Two years ago this month, I posted my thoughts on the HIV scare in the porn industry.
It generated lots of attention in the blogosphere and some heated exchanges - even among those who claimed to have medical backgrounds but could still not account for why Africa had such a high HIV rate compared to us. These "doctors" also couldn't explain the higher infection rates among African-Americans here in the U.S.
Some put forth the implausible arguments that it was simply a different strain of HIV that somehow/magically never managed to take a foothold in North America.
Others suggested that there was genetic component that somehow made Africans (and African-Americans) more susceptible to HIV infection (much like Sickle-Cell Anemia, etc.)
We may now have the answer.
It is fascinating to revisit the comments/debate in the original post in light of this new information.
