Google alert -- your name on porn sites?

This is a very frightening story of internet privacy violation. Your problem is probably not that serious. However, a search of names on google, including mine and those of other bloggers, will turn up some graphic porn sites. In most cases, the names do not appear on the site, just on google.

I have corresponded with google and am waiting for the "looking into it" process to run its course. You may want to google your own name and make the appropriate noises to google.

Comments on other findings would be interesting.

What bothers me is finding a bunch of blogs in my search results for porn.

Which sites turn up in a search depends on the text they contain, but iit also depends on the pages which link to them. What has probably happened is that some porn merchant has decided to try to steal some of your traffic by making a page that says "blah blah CALBLOG blah CALBLOG blah". Every time it says CALBLOG it will link to the porn site, not yours. When people do a search for CALBLOG Google thinks that the porn site is highly relevant - see how many pages talking about CALBLOG link to the porn site?

Lots of people think that Google is now more or less broken by these techniques, but I wouldn't be too worried. Most people find your site from other sites they like, not by doing Google searches for your name. None the less, I well recognise that it's irritating.
