There's been a 5.9 earthquake near Parkfield, CA. 5.9 is serious but not worrisome. What is interesting though is that Parkfield, which is very active, is often the subject of research into earthquake prediction. Check out this 1992 article on an expired Parkfield prediction and this one on a more recent unfulfilled prediction south of Parkfield. It will be interesting to see if this 5.9 and the flurry of aftershocks will produce data allowing a successful prediction.
