PayPal is threatening to cancel the Daily Pundit's account because of his blog's content. GoogleAds threatened to do the same to Prestopundit yesterday. While, on its face, it seems reasonable for both companies to not want to be associated with "offensive" material, these are not porn or hate sites. The ability of the larger internet companies like Google and Ebay (which owns Paypal) to indirectly influence the content of blogs will be a huge problem if it continues.

If you don't like their rules then take your business elsewhere.

However, I do not think the solution is to regulate them or treat them as anything other than private companies.

Just do business with someone else. Or even better, create your own business and compete with them.
Then, you can set your own rules and regulations.
Posted by: Flap at September 24, 2004 02:18 PM (Permalink)Paypal is a pseudo-monopoly because it doesnt make sense to use many different services that do what Paypal does. The same holds true of Microsoft to a greater degree.
So the regular model of competition really doesn't solve the problem with paypal. Obviously regulation doesn't either. What DOES help is to encourage boycotts and bad press for paypal by getting the word out.
At this point it might be premature to do that since daily pundit doesn't have any specific info yet. For all we know some loose cannon is doing this, or maybe there is some automation problem that flags these sites.
Ebay usually has to be dragged kicking and screaming to turn away business, so it would be very shocking if all of a sudden they started meddling in this way. That is why I am somewhat suspicious of all this and would prefer that we get more details.
