PETA parenting

I read Psychology Today about 20 years ago. I picked one up last night at the grocery store because I couldn't resist the headline "The Lighter Side of Brain Surgery." I won't be subscribing.

Check out this paragraph:

"When I was 10, I was a closeted vegetariam. I was so afraid to tell anyone," says Patrick Kwan, 22, a vegan who lives in Mew York City. At school, other kids pelted him with meat when they discovered he wouldn't touch it. "I used to run home from school crying and call PETA," Kwan says . . . .

Does Psychology Today think it's a little weird for a 10 year old to be calling PETA instead of, oh, I don't know, talking to his parents?

Apparently not. The next sentence is "Vegans are used to scorn and misunderstanding."

I know of one person who became a vegetarian at a young age whose parents didn't approve and would try to feed her meat without her knowing. Kids don't feel comfortable telling their parents a lot of things, I don't think its that odd.

Plus I would assume that PETA members would be more understanding of the problem. A friend of mine had trouble talking to her boyfriend about problems she faced at work because he was a doctor and had no experience working in the corporate world.

I don't think PETA people really understand anything in any meaningful way. Even my vegan sister thinks they're nuts.

As for people making fun of vegetarins/vegans, I find it's mostly proportional to how much they proselytize. One devout hindu in my high school was particularly annoying.

If the girls or just one of them wanted to go vegan, I'd let them. However, if anyone doesn't want their 10-year-old to be vegetarian or vegan, my view is the child has to wait. While it may not be unusual for children to hide things, I'd expect a magazine called Psychology Today to at least comment on the fact that somethng was amiss when it happens.

John nails it in one.

I know an entirely non-"religious" non-proselytising vegan; I'd never taunt her with a piece of meat (No, not like that, you sickos. Of course I'd do that. But that's irrelevant.)

On the other hand, people who make a Point Of Being Vegan/Veggie and Make You Know It, and worst of all Want To Convert You...

Well, maybe waking up with a cooked pig in their bed, with an apple in its mouth... maybe that's just Karma, you know?
