Issa may very well campaign against the recall now. Story on Political Pulse, California Insider (linking to the Chronicle) and Damn Foreigner (linking to the Daily Kos).
Posted by Justene Adamec at September 23, 2003 09:44 AM | TrackBackI predict he's setting himself up to endorse someone... XRLQ comments on my posts that he doubts it... we will see.
Posted by: boifromtroy at September 23, 2003 11:05 AM (Permalink)If he's truly against the recall now, the recall dies. How do you campaign against commercials that say "even the guy who funded it now thinks it's a bad idea?"
Posted by: aphrael at September 23, 2003 11:41 AM (Permalink)...or he's setting up the justification for party bosses to force Tom out... see Brulte's ress release on my site...
Posted by: boifromtroy at September 23, 2003 11:42 AM (Permalink)Issa's move strikes me as petulant and desperate. Akin to a child that threatens to pick up his marbles and go home should things not go his way.
As for "party bosses" forcing Tom out... I don't think that is possible. The party has never given Tom anything - not so much as a dime for any of his races. They may threaten him with a primary opponent next March, but I doubt that worries him very much. Only one guy has enough juice to take on McClintock, and that's Tony Strickland - who happens to be a McClintock protege.
Posted by: Right-Wing Vegetarian at September 23, 2003 12:27 PM (Permalink)Actually, I don't put anything past Issa now. He may well be setting himself up to endorse one of them, but if so, that's still no excuse for threatening to drink the Kool-Aid. If he wants to endorse one of the candidates, he should simply endorse him and leave it at that. Conditioning his support for the recall itself on the prospects of a Republican winning it merely plays into the Davis camp's hands, lending new credibility to the old "this is just a Republican power grab" meme.
Posted by: Xrlq at September 23, 2003 12:33 PM (Permalink)XRLQ is correct.
Issa's comments really do lend truth to the Rat argument that this has been nothing more than a "power grab" attempt. It isn't about Davis at all! Otherwise, why vote against the recall? I'm not sure how many Republicans will actually vote against the recall based on Issa's remarks - but they are sure to depress Republican turnout.
It does look like Davis will hang on now. Who would have thunk?
Posted by: Right-Wing Vegetarian at September 23, 2003 01:00 PM (Permalink)boifromtroy called it first... KFI 640 just mentioned that Issa will be endorsing a candidate next week.
Posted by: Right-Wing Vegetarian at September 23, 2003 01:29 PM (Permalink)I second that xrlq is right. Just the wavering is going to spur a new wave of television advertising for Davis quoting (or paraphrasing) Issa, and it's just plain stupid of him to say it.
Posted by: Will at September 23, 2003 04:21 PM (Permalink)If the Recall falls apart becuse of McClintock's stubborness, he will truly drink the Kool Aid. I would not support McClintock for any office anywhere.
Posted by: Breaker at September 23, 2003 04:36 PM (Permalink)poor Tony Strickland has cooked his goose by not standing up to McClintock.
